Get your business ranking higher with a Google business listing.
Local SEO is the key to growing your local business!
Local SEO or “local Search Engine Optimisation” has become in recent years the “Holy Grail” of high ranking in Google search results, especially for small and medium local businesses.
The rise of this tool (whose full potential is still unfolding) for increasing visibility with potential local customers was possible due to the increased access of Internet users to mobile traffic. Between 2018 and 2019, there was a more than 200% rise in the number of mobile searches containing the terms “where to buy” + “near me”. That opens a whole world of possibilities for local websites and local businesses’ online promotion, including for your business.
So what is local SEO?
Local Search Engine Optimisation is a series of techniques and tactics designed to improve websites’ rankings in local search results. A well-designed local SEO strategy provides an “increasing search visibility for businesses that serve their communities face-to-face“.
How does SEO work?
When an Internet user types a brand, a business name and/or a location on their mobile device, the search engine returns the most relevant results according to the search criteria used, together with a map.
The top 3 local businesses matching the search criteria are displayed first on this map, making them more visible than others. To have your local business displayed as high as possible in this ranking, our local SEO Wellington team can design a tailored-to-your-business and adapted-to-your-local-competitive environment local SEO strategy. Since “46% of all searches on Google are seeking local information“, this strategy will be your best tool to become more visible in your local community and hence attract more customers. And the more customers know about your business, the more likely it is you will conclude more sales, therefore growing your business.
What types of businesses need to use local SEO?
Local SEO is needed by:
- all businesses with a bricks-and-mortar location such as a bar, a doctor’s office, a local general store, a hair salon etc.;
- All businesses professionals who provide a service at the customer’s location (also known as “Service Area Businesses” (SAB)): an electrician, a plumber, a caterer, a florist, a locksmith etc.
How can local SEO make your business more visible?
If clients can reach your business in a 10 to 20 minutes drive or if you are a SAB, you need to be on Google Business Listing (currently known as Google Business Profile).
And here is why:
Google and other search engines use specific factors to determine if your local business is geographically relevant or not to users who conduct local searches on their mobile devices. This, in some way, is a relief since you don’t have to compete with multi-million dollars budgets corporations, but only with local businesses providing products or services similar to yours. But the objective is to make your website and your business easier to find than theirs.
Listing your business on Google Business Profile helps you accomplish this objective. Its local listings – Google Local Pack or Google Local Finder select and display, from the listed businesses in their directories, the most geographically relevant businesses due to a Google search.
What you need to know about the importance of having your business present in Google listings is this. Google Business Profile is the number one local ranking factor, meaning it “has the most impact on where your business appears in results for local business searches”.
If you need to register or update the existing listing of your business on Google Business Profile, contact our local SEO Wellington team, and they will jump right in.
Our SEO Wellington services include:
Auditing your Google Business Profile listing
This audit means we check if your basic data listed is correct and complete: name of the company (as detailed on your business card), address, phone (also known as NAP), accurate business description, opening hours of your business, e-mail, website URL. We can also look into your secondary data: photos posts that appear in the GMP.
Create a business listing on business resources
We will list your business on other business resources such as Bing Places, Apple Maps Connect, or local and industry-specific directories. If your business would gain more visibility by being listed on such a directory, we will make sure we will put it there.
Check the primary and secondary categories you have chosen on GMP
Getting the primary category right is essential, as it significantly impacts rankings. After analysing your business profile, we will select the category that matches most with the primary search you want to rank for. For instance, if you run a law firm that provides criminal defence services, your primary category should be “Criminal Defense Attorney” instead of “Law Firm”. Secondary categories should be categories relevant for your business – think about all additional keywords that potential customers might use to find your business online and select the categories that contain those keywords.
Citations
Build a structure of local citations – meaning we will get other companies to mention on their websites your business information (NAP and eventually a link to your website). Citations will help you gain more online visibility, hence enabling customers to find your business and choose your products and services.
On-page SEO
Optimise the content of your web pages for both search engines and users. This means we have a look at and optimise everything from content to title tags and internal links on your website
Customer reviews
Ask customers to review your products, services and the experience of buying from you.
In 2015 local search experts granted a close to 10% weighing of reviews in Local Search Ranking Factors. In 2021, this percentage was more than 15%, confirming that people rely significantly on the opinion of those who have already tried the product or service they are targeting.
